A webcam, or web camera, is a digital peripheral connecting to a computer. It can capture images and send them privately over the Internet to a web page or another computer.

Webcams connect or integrate with computers or other devices. They require a means to send images. Some cameras support ethernet and wireless technologies, allowing connection to a computer network. These devices have the name network video devices, so there is no ambiguity.

History of a Webcam

The webcam, or web camera, originated from the necessity of monitoring a coffee maker. They used it in the basement of Cambridge University’s Computer Science Department. When one of the employees asked for coffee, he had to go downstairs from his office to check the coffee machine. So, it was unclear whether the device was ready or not.

In 1991, Quentin Stafford-Fraser and Paul Jardetzky faced a problem. They grew tired of checking the coffee maker in the basement. As a solution, they designed a client/server protocol. This protocol transmitted the coffee machine’s image at a resolution of 128 x 128 pixels.

Due to their client/server protocol design, they could check the coffee machine’s status on their office computer screen. As a result, there was no need to go to the basement anymore. They named this protocol XCoffee, and after several months of debugging, they decided to commercialize it. Later, in 1992, the first webcam called XCam went on sale.

Basic Features of Webcam

Older or early webcam devices usually had a low resolution of around 640 X 480. The reason for the low resolution was the need for small file sizes. It allowed for instant transmission over the Internet.

Some webcam models have hardware features. These include a 360° rotating lens, a surface-adaptive base, and an integrated microphone. The primary purpose of these devices is the ability to take low-resolution pictures.

Usually, people set up an old or new webcam device to a computer through the USB port. With webcam software installed on the computer, users can take images or prepare videos from the device.

Webcams typically consist of a lens, an image sensor, and an electronic circuit. The most common type of lens used in these devices is the plastic one. The equipment with image sensors can be CCD (Charge-Coupled Devices) or CMOS. Other sensor constructions are generally available in lower-cost cameras.

Typically, these devices offer average users a 1 to 1.3 MP resolution. They provide VGA resolution (640×480) at around 30 frames per second. Today, higher-end equipment has answers of up to 3, 5, 8, 10, or 15 megapixels and even higher.

The electronic circuit in this equipment serves as the basic unit of video speech. It reads the sensor image and transmits it to the computer. However, some models use a CMOS sensor integrated into a single silicon chip to save location and cost.

Webcam Hardware Parts

The internal parts of a webcam include the image sensor and electronic circuit board. On the other hand, external components consist of the digital viewer, audio recorder, turntable, data cable, and cover.

The digital viewer plays a central role. It captures images for transmission or recording from the local or remote network. Based on cost, different models use the sound recorder device to capture and send the sound.

The user can adjust the turntable to transfer images from any position. The data cable enables data transmission from the camera to the computer. Additionally, the cover protects the internal electronic circuit.

Web Camera Ports

Webcams usually use a USB connection. This port can be USB 1.1, USB 2.0, or USB 3.0. Today, some devices have a higher bandwidth USB Type-C port and can record in 1080p.

There are also webcams with Wi-Fi wireless technology, often called IP cameras.

Security of Web Cameras

Webcams used on personal computers can pose a security risk. Individuals with enough knowledge can access and record their activities. Therefore, users should only connect these devices to their desktop computers.

Laptop computer users have options to enhance webcam security. They can turn off the webcam through the device manager or cover the lens with electrical tape.

In the past, malicious users have forced children to make sexual recordings. Also, they threatened to distribute these harmful images. Another security concern is using explicit messaging or video calling services by adults. These activities violate privacy rights.

Video Cameras

The purpose of using video cameras is to record motion pictures. This category includes professional devices used in television broadcasts or film productions.

Cameras with many color sensors enhance resolution and color gamut. But they lack VCR or microphone hardware.

Amateur Video Cameras

Amateur devices record video directly to a memory storage device. They have a microphone and an LCD screen for watching movies.


People generally use webcams, or web camera devices, for online conversation and video recording. They are digital cameras specifically designed to work directly connected to a computer.

Digital Cameras with Preview

Preview cameras frame the image before shooting. They are still cameras that use digital prints created on a liquid crystal display. Photographers widely use these devices.

Compact Digital Cameras

Compact cameras have autofocus and lighting features. Due to their small size, these devices have very short focal lengths. This results in a considerable depth of field. So they can focus simultaneously on objects of different distances.

Bridge Cameras

Bridge or Consumer digital equipment are still physical, like DSLRs. They have some advanced features. So, calling them high-quality LPD cameras is also possible.
