How DHCP Works?
After the title called “How to Enable DHCP on Windows 10?”, Let’s answer the question called “How DHCP works?”. Firstly, we must know this information to enable DHCP on Windows 10. There are 4 steps performed on the DHCP backplane. These steps are DHCP Discover, DHCP Offer, DHCP Request, and DHCP ACK. These 4 steps occur between the DHCP server and the DHCP client.
Let’s explain these steps;
These steps apply after the process to enable DHCP on Windows 10.
DHCP discover sends a discover message in the network environment the first time the computer is turned on. This message explains whether there is a DHCP server on the network. If you have a DHCP server, the computer tells the DHCP server that I need an IP address.
When DHCP offer sends a computer Discover message in the network environment, the DHCP offer message is received by the DHCP server. Then, the DHCP server looks at the database and identifies a suitable IP address for the computer. This IP address is transmitted to the computer via the DHCP offer message. If the computer, ie the DHCP client, confirms this message, it will get the IP address.
The computer sending the DHCP offer message will send a DHCP request message to the DHCP server again. The computer informs you that you have confirmed the IP address with this message. In summary, it accepts IP address.
When the DHCP request message is transmitted to the DHCP server, the DHCP server sends the IP address, DNS IP address, Subnet Mask, Gateway, and WINS information along with the computer ack message.
