What is VMware Workstation Snapshot?
What is VMware Workstation Snapshot Feature? In VMware, the Snapshot feature can be simulated by the Restore process in the Windows operating system. With Snapshot, on any virtual machine “restore point operation” installed on VMware Workstation 12 can be performed.
The “System Restore” created in one virtual machine can be restored to any point created after the restoration point (for example, installation of an office program, etc.). As a result, the VMware Snapshot feature is the “System Restore” process of the VMware Workstation virtualization program.
What Does VMware Snapshot Feature Do?
How does a VMware Snapshot work? After defining the VMware Workstation Snapshot, let’s talk about what the Snapshot feature does. The Snapshot feature is a very simple feature and is a very useful feature. For example; With the VMware Workstation 12 virtualization program, you installed a new version of the Windows 10 operating system.
First, take a Snapshot for a clean installation, and then consider using Windows 10 operating system as a virtual machine. After creating the snapshot, you tested the compatibility by installing the programs you were using in the new Windows operating system.
But you faced some mistakes. This is the best way to go back to clean installation at this point. You may not want to spend time with the removal of the program via the operating system. Because; Some programs are quite large.

How to Take Snapshot in VMware Step by Step?
After we talk about what the snapshot is and what it does, let’s take a look at “how to take Snapshot in VMware Workstation 12?”. Since it is a way I love to step-by-step, basically I always aim at simple users. Personally, I do not like to talk with a couple of images …
Anyway… Let’s log in to VMware Snapshot Import.
Taking a Snapshot is a very easy process. To take Snapshot in VMware Workstation 12, firstly, open the VMware Workstation 12 virtualization program, and then click the Add Snapshot button on the virtual machine where you want to import the snapshot, as shown in the following image.
Once clicks the Snapshot button the Take Snapshot window will be opened. If you installed the virtual machine for the first time, you can write the First Installation here. It will be easy for you to write the snapshot name and description. If you receive more than one Snapshot in the future, it will make it easy to remember where you are.
After filling in the snapshot name and description, click on the Take Snapshot button.
Once clicks on the button the window will close. For control purposes, click on the Snapshot Manager button to view the Snapshot created.
If you have written the snapshot name, click Restore Mode.
As you can see, the generated snapshot can be checked here. Now click the Close button.
In addition, you can perform VMware Snapshot Import, VMware Snapshot Delete and VMware Snapshot Restore from the snapshot management window.
After you have checked the snapshot, run the virtual machine by clicking on the Power on this virtual machine button.
As an example, I implemented the setup of the Speccy program. Now the Speccy program is installed on the Windows 10 operating system. As a high-dimensional example, if we assume that we are installing Photoshop, we can add and remove it from the program.
However, I do not want to uninstall the program because I do not like registry entries, empty folders, and unnecessary files, and I will restore the system to the complex. I want to shut down my Windows 10 virtual computer and restore it again because it is Snapshot feature, which is my easier way to go.
To close the virtual machine, click on the option you see in the image below.
Click Power Off to completely cut off the power of the virtual machine. Actually like this, I do not recommend much 🙂
Once the virtual computer is shut down, click on the button to enter Snapshot management.
The option “You are here” tells you the jobs made after the snapshot was taken. Once you click on the Snapshot you have added, click the Go To button.
As you can see, Do you want to restore “The First Installation!”? The question is asked. Do you want to go back to Snapshot? it asks. Continue by clicking on the Yes button.
Yes, right after the button is pressed, the window will close. Now run the virtual machine to check the latest status.
The process is complete! As you can see, the Windows 10 virtual machine has returned to the initial installation!
The VMware Workstation Snapshot feature consists of several steps, as you can see. We can also create a Restore Point while the virtual machine is turned off and on. You will understand better how useful this feature is with the more complex tasks you will do with the virtualization program.
