How to Re-Add Virtual Machines in VirtualBox? – When you update the Oracle VM VirtualBox, or when you install VirtualBox after installing a new system, the virtual machines you installed will not be automatically added to the program.
How to Re-Add Virtual Machines in VirtualBox?
To add VirtualBox to previously installed virtual machines, you need to export the virtual machines. Once you have exported the virtual machines, you can easily add your previous configuration to VirtualBox with Import.
However, if you have not exported the virtual machines and want to re-add the virtual machines, you can resolve this problem once you have completed the steps in this article.
To re-add the virtual machines you installed previously to VirtualBox, you have to add them as if you were installing a new virtual machine with VirtualBox.
How to Re-Add Virtual Machines Previously Installed in VirtualBox?
Follow the steps below in order to add the virtual computers that you have previously installed on your Hard Disk or an external disk.
When you update your VirtualBox program or install it on a new computer, you may see the following image that virtual machines are not added automatically.
The virtual machines installed with VirtualBox are listed in the left panel as follows.
Open the location of the virtual machines previously installed with VirtualBox. For example, you can double-click on the Windows 7 virtual machine and see that it is not automatically added to the VirtualBox program.
If we try to add the virtual machine to VirtualBox by dragging and dropping it, the operation will not be successful.
Therefore, you can add virtual machines installed by creating a new virtual machine on VirtualBox. From the VirtualBox menu, click on the New button and select the virtual machine name and version.
Then click on the Next button to continue.
You can set the RAM size for the virtual machine you added in the following window. For Windows 7 virtual machine, 2 GB of RAM value will suffice. After specifying the RAM size, click on the Next button.
This step is the most important. You can select the Use an existing virtual hard disk file option as shown below and click the Browse button.
In the window that opens, select the Windows 7.vdi virtual machine hard disk file and click the Open button.
After adding an existing virtual machine to VirtualBox, click the Create button.
After the virtual machine is added to the VirtualBox panel, click the Start button to run the virtual machine. As you can see in the following image, the Windows 7 virtual machine is functioning properly.
If you have updated VirtualBox, you must update the Guest Additions after adding the virtual machine to the program.
From the Windows 7 virtual machine menu, click Devices and then select the Insert Guest Additions CD image option.
Continue by clicking the Next button in the VirtualBox Guest Additions installation window.
Leave the guest extensions installation location in the default location and click on the Next button.
Click the Install button to start updating the guest additions for the virtual machine.
After updating the guest extensions, restart the virtual machine.
We have updated the Windows 7 virtual machine guest additions from 5.1.3 to 5.2.6.
