In this article, we will install the latest version of Oracle VM VirtualBox on Linux Mint 19 Tara / Linux Mint 18.3 Sylvia Cinnamon 64 Bit step by step.
How to Install Oracle VM VirtualBox 5.2 on Linux Mint 19/Linux Mint 18?
The latest version of the VirtualBox virtualization program is 5.2.18. Follow the steps below to install VirtualBox on Linux Mint step by step.
There are 3 methods for installing VirtualBox on Linux Mint.
- You can install VirtualBox on Linux Mint using Package Manager.
- You can install VirtualBox on Linux Mint using .deb package.
- You can install VirtualBox with apt-get on Terminal on Linux Mint.
To install the latest version of VirtualBox on the Linux Mint, we will use the apt-get method of the Terminal screen. On the Linux Mint 19/18 desktop, open the Terminal and run the following command to edit the apt package software list.
sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list
According to the Linux Mint version you are using, add one of the following output to sources.list and press Ctrl + X, then press the Y key and press Enter to save the file.
Linux Mint 18: deb http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian xenial contrib Linux Mint 19: deb [arch=amd64] http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian bionic contrib
After updating the Linux Mint package list, add the Public Key of the VirtualBox repository using the following command in Terminal.
wget -q https://www.virtualbox.org/download/oracle_vbox_2016.asc -O- | sudo apt-key add -
Now execute the sudo apt-get update command to update the software packages of Linux Mint.
To start VirtualBox installation on Linux Mint 19/18, execute the following command. After this, you will be prompted to use 187 MB of disk space and press Y to continue with the installation and press Enter.
sudo apt-get install virtualbox-5.2
And finally, install DKMS to update the kernel modules for VirtualBox.
sudo apt-get install dkms
To start VirtualBox, type VirtualBox in Terminal and press Enter.
After successfully installing Oracle VM VirtualBox 5.2 on Linux Mint 19/18, you can check the version of the program from Help / About.
