If you encounter with the “An unexpected error has occurred. Restart Internet Explorer, and then try again.” error when attempting to access the Internet on a Windows 95 virtual machine running on VirtualBox, the Internet connection settings of the virtual machine probably have not been made.
One of the main reasons why a computer can not access the Internet is that it can not obtain an IP address from a DHCP server. With this being the main problem, the computer’s LAN (Local Area Network) settings may not have been set.
However, to connect to the Internet on a Windows 95 virtual machine in VirtualBox, the TCP/IP protocol must be installed. If the TCP/IP protocol is not installed in the Windows 95 virtual machine, you will not be able to access the Internet.

In this article, after installing Windows 95 with VirtualBox, we will install the TCP/IP protocol to connect the virtual machine to the Internet, and finally, we will test its Internet connection.
How to Connect a Windows 95 Computer to the Internet in VirtualBox?
For Internet connection of Windows 95 running on VirtualBox on Windows 10, follow the steps below in order.
Open the VirtualBox program and run the Windows 95 virtual machine. After Windows 95 opens, open Internet Explorer. If you get an error like the one below when you open Internet Explorer, you need to configure the Windows 95 Internet connection settings.
Click the OK button to close the warning window.
To install the TCP/IP protocol on the Windows 95 virtual machine, follow the path to Start/Settings/Control Panel and open the Control Panel.
Double-click on Network in the Control Panel window.
Click the Add button to add the TCP/IP protocol in the Network window.
In the Network Component Type window, click Protocol first. On the Network Protocol screen, select TCP/IP and click the OK button.
You can see that TCP/IP has been added to the Network screen. Click the OK button to save the settings.
The following warning prompts you to add your Windows 95 CD-ROM for Windows 95 TCP/IP setup. Click the OK button to continue.
In our previous Windows 95 installation, we copied the Windows 95 operating system installation files to the C: drive. Specify where the C:\WIN95 folder is located and click on the OK button to start the TCP/IP protocol setup.
Wait while the TCP/IP protocol installs for Windows 95 Internet connection…
After the TCP/IP protocol setup, restart the virtual machine.
After restarting Windows 95 virtual machine, open Internet Explorer and verify that the Internet settings work by viewing any of the websites.
As you can see below, we have successfully connected the Windows 95 virtual machine to the Internet in VirtualBox!
