How to Create External Virtual Switch in Hyper-V Manager? – After you have set up the virtual machine with Hyper-V Manager on Windows 10, the first step is to set up the virtual machine’s network settings.
How to Create External Virtual Switch in Hyper-V Manager?
The most common method used when configuring Hyper-V virtual network settings is to create an External Virtual Switch. The main reason for creating an External Virtual Switch on Hyper-V is to include the virtual machine in our physical network.
The Hyper-V virtual machine providing access to our physical network can communicate with all devices on the network. As a result, a Windows 10 virtual machine running on Hyper-V can also access the Internet through the External Virtual Switch network configuration.
If you have not done Hyper-V installation before, you can access the related links below.

In this article, we will not touch the entire virtual network configuration of Hyper-V. But in our next article, we will examine each one in detail.
Before moving on to configuring External Virtual Switch in Hyper-V, create a virtual machine with Hyper-V on the Windows operating system and perform a clean installation of Windows 10. After completing these steps, we’ll take the virtual machine running on Hyper-V to your physical network or the Internet.
How to Connect Virtual Machine to Internet in Hyper-V?
First, we will create a new network adapter on Hyper-V, and then we will define the adapter we created on the virtual machine. When configuring the External Virtual Switch in Hyper-V, we need to choose the network adapter of our physical computer connected to the Internet.
For example, if our computer is connected to the Internet with a Wi-Fi adapter, then we need to select the Wi-Fi card in the Hyper-V Virtual Switch configuration.
Follow the steps below to configure the virtual machine for using the Internet on Hyper-V.
First, open the Hyper-V Manager and check that Virtual Switch has not been added to the virtual machine from Right-click / Settings section of the virtual machine.
Let’s add a Virtual Switch for the Windows 10 virtual machine running on Hyper-V.
To configure the Windows 10 virtual machine network settings, click Virtual Switch Manager in the Hyper-V Actions panel.
In the Virtual Switch Manager window, select the External option and click on the Create Virtual Switch button.
In the Hyper-V Virtual Switch configuration window, select the network card that your physical computer is connected to the Internet. And name the External Switch you added.
As you can see in the example below, we selected the Qualcomm Atheros AR9002WB-1NG Wireless Network Adapter card because we are connected to the Internet via a Wi-Fi network adapter via a laptop.
Click the Apply/OK button for the settings to take effect.
Once you click the Apply button, a warning windows as below will open. Click on the Yes button to apply the changes.
Applying changes for virtual network settings…
After adding the External Virtual Switch in Hyper-V, we need to identify the network card in the Windows 10 virtual machine. On the virtual machine, click the Right button / Settings.
In the virtual machine settings window, click on Network Adapter and on the right panel select the HyperVWAN virtual switch created from the Virtual Switch drop-down menu.
After configuring the External Virtual Switch setting for the Windows 10 virtual machine, click the OK button to save the settings.
To test the External Virtual Switch on Hyper-V, run the virtual machine.
Start the virtual machine by clicking the Start button.
After you add a Hyper-V virtual switch, you can see that the virtual machine gets an IP address over the physical network.
You can also check the IP address configuration from the Windows 10 network settings. Now, let’s test the Windows 10 Internet connection the Hyper-V External Virtual Switch.
The Windows 10 virtual machine on Hyper-V is successfully connected to the Internet via the External Virtual Switch configuration.
