How to Integrate VMware with GNS3? – To integrate the VMware Workstation program with the GNS3 program, you first need to install the VMware Workstation program. When you install the VMware Workstation program, VMware and the Virtual Network Editor program installs together.

The Virtual Network Editor program creates VMnets on VMware (you can think it as Virtual Switch). These VMnets can also be called network cards.

VMware integration with GNS3 is a simple process. If you have installed VMware before, the GNS3 is automatically integrated into the workspace when adding computers. However, after ending the process to integrate VMware with GNS3, we need to understand the operating logic on the topology.

To integrate VMware with GNS3, let’s first design a small network design. Later, let’s move on to this little network design.

Open the GNS3 program and apply the design as shown below.

VMware Integration with GNS3

Let’s start the process of VMware integration with GNS3.

   Step 1

Open the GNS3 program and apply the design as shown below.

   Step 2

After applying this design, run the VMware Virtual Network Editor program. In the Virtual Network Editor program, create VMnet3 and make the IP address block “192.168.8.0 255.255.255.0”.

You need to set VMnets to Host-Only for VMware integration with GNS3.

   Step 3

You need to set up VMnet3 created with Virtual Network Editor from network and share center. This adjustment is intended to prevent complexity and to use the 192.168.8.1 IP address for the Cisco Router.

Double click VMware Network Adapter VMnet3.

   Step 4

After double-clicking VMware Network Adapter VMnet3, the properties window will open. Select the TCP/IPv4 option from the options there, then click the properties button.

   Step 10

After completing the process to integrate VMware with GNS3, make the two virtual machine settings that are installed on VMware Workstation. There is no such thing as the operating systems there. Only the network card settings on VMware should be done correctly.

In the Windows 8.1 virtual machine, click Network Adapter. Virtual Machine settings will be opened and then select VMnet3 (Host-Only) from the drop-down list in the Custom Specific Virtual Network option. Then click the OK button to save the settings.

   Step 12

In the Virtual Network Editor settings, we had made the IP address range of VMnet3 192.168.8.0. After starting the Windows 8.1 virtual machine, change the IP address to 192.168.8.5 from the network and share center and save the settings.

Give the 192.168.8.1 IP address to the FastEthernet0/0 interface of the Cisco Router. Apply as shown below.

Cisco Router interface IP address commands;

R1# conf t
R1(config)# interface fastethernet0/0
R1(config-if)# ip address 192.168.8.1 255.255.255.0
R1(config-if)# no shutdown
R1(config)# end

   Step 17

We have successfully completed the process to integrate VMware with GNS3 so far. However, when we continue processing according to the topology created, computers can not ping the router. Ping packets are dropped due to erroneous transmission in ping packets.

This error occurs when the Cisco router is pinged while two computers connected to the Cisco Switch are on the same network. We can say a little mistake of the GNS3 program…

If you apply this problem to the Cisco switch in the following image, the ping operation will be successful. Another solution will be the ping process if you add Cisco Hub instead of the Cisco Switch. After you change the settings on the Cisco Switch, click the OK button to save the settings.
