How to Install GNS3 VM 2.1.0 on Ubuntu 17.10?
In addition to providing increased GNS3 VM performance, it also stores Cisco Router IOS images that are added to GNS3 in one place. It’s the biggest advantage of being Linux-based and it does not consume your computer’s resources too much.
To get the GNS3 VM, you need to download it from the GNS3 website. The latest version of GNS3 VM is 2.1.0. If your system has a previous version of the GNS3 VM installed, you can check out How to Upgrade GNS3 VM.
In our previous tutorials, we implemented GNS3 installations on MacOS and Windows. In this article, we will install GNS3 VM 2.1.0 using the VMware Workstation 14 virtualization program on Linux/Ubuntu 17.10 operating system, and finally, upload the Cisco Router c7200 IOS image on the GNS3 VM.
How to Install GNS3 VM 2.1.0 on VMware Workstation 14 on Ubuntu 17.10?
If you have not done VMware Workstation installation on Ubuntu before, you can check out How to Install VMware Workstation 14 on Ubuntu 17.10. After performing the VMware Workstation 14 installation, follow the steps for installing and configuring GNS3 VM 2.1.0 on Ubuntu.
Download the GNS3 VM 2.1.0.ova file from the GNS3 website.
Open the VMware Workstation 14 Pro virtualization program on Ubuntu 17.10 and click Open to add the GNS3 VM 2.1.0.ova file.
Select the GNS3 VM 2.1.0.ova file and click the Open button.
In the VMware Import Virtual Machine window, the location where the GNS3 VM is to be imported is reported. Click the Next button to continue.
GNS3 VM 2.1.0 file is importing to VMware Workstation 14.
After successfully completing the GNS3 VM 2.1.0.ova import operation, run the imported virtual machine.

You can see that the GNS3 VM version is most up-to-date version. Also, test the network connection by pinging the GNS3 VM IP address.
To run the GNS3 program, type “gns3” in the Terminal and press Enter.
After starting GNS3, click on Edit/Preferences.
In the GNS3 Preferences window, click on the GNS3 VM option, then select Enable the GNS3 VM and click on the OK button.
The GNS3 VM connection has installed successfully!
To add a Cisco Router on the GNS3 VM, click Help/Setup Wizard, and then click Next in the Setup Wizard window by selecting the Run the topologies in an isolated and standard VM option.
In the New Appliance Template window, select the Add an IOS Router using a real IOS image (supported by Dynamips) option and click the OK button.
To add a Cisco Router on GNS3 VM 2.1.0, you need to select the Run this IOS Router on the GNS3 VM option in the New IOS router template window.
Select the Cisco Router c7200 to be uploaded to the GNS3 VM and click the Open button.

Set the Idle-PC value for the Cisco Router and continue.
From the GNS3 tools menu, drag and drop the Cisco Router to the workspace and run the Router.
