In order to use Cisco IOU images on Linux systems, we will install GNS3 with IOU support. Before I set up the GNS3 IOU, let’s talk briefly about what is the IOU and what it does.
What is IOU in GNS3?
IOU (IOS on Unix) is a technology that looks like Dynamips but uses fewer resources. IOU images imitate all the features of a particular Cisco IOS technology.
The IOU is also referred to as the Cisco IOU. IOU images do not require a hypervisor to imitate the Cisco hardware, and IOU images are much more powerful than Dynamips. IOU use in GNS3 uses system memory and CPU less.
As a result, using Cisco IOU images on GNS3 allows you to create more specific network topologies.
How to Install GNS3 with IOU Support in Linux?

- Edit iourc.txt (GNS3 IOU License File) with Cisco IOU Keygen
Download the Cisco IOU L2/L3 images and CiscoIOUkeygen.py file to your computer by searching in Google for the GNS3 IOU installation on Linux/Ubuntu 17.10.
Next, follow the steps below for installing GNS3 IOU on Ubuntu 17.10.
First of all, to install GNS3 on Ubuntu, open the Terminal and execute the following commands in order.
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gns3/ppa sudo apt-get update
After adding GNS3 to Repository, execute sudo apt-get install gns3-gui to start the installation.
Setup reports that it will use 811 MB of additional disk space. Type Y (Yes) and press Enter.
Press Enter on the No option to not allow non-superusers to run GNS3.
Also, continue with No to not allow non-superusers to perform packet analysis using the Wireshark program.
To start GNS3, type gns3 on the Terminal and press Enter.

How to Install and Configure Cisco IOU in GNS3 on Ubuntu?
After installing GNS3 on Ubuntu 17.10, we will enable IOU support on Ubuntu. Follow the steps below to install Cisco IOU on Ubuntu.
For IOU setup, open the Terminal and execute the following commands in order.
sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386 sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install gns3-iou
To license Cisco IOU images on GNS3, run CiscoIOUKeygen.py and paste the generated code into the iourc.txt file and save the file.
Copy the code and paste it into the iourc.txt file.
Run GNS3 again.
In the Setup Wizard window, select Run topologies on my computer and click on the Next button.
Click the Next button in the Local server configuration window.
After the local server connection is established, click on the Next button.
Close the New appliance template window by clicking on the Cancel button.
Create a new project on GNS3.
Once you have installed the GNS3 IOU, click Edit on the GNS3 menu to license the IOU images, then click Preferences.
In the Preferences window, click IOS on Unix and then click the Browse button.
Navigate to the location where you have located the iourc.txt file and select the file and click on the Open button.
Once you have licensed the IOU, click on IOU Devices.
Click the New button to add Cisco IOU image on GNS3.
In the GNS3 IOU window, type a name for the IOU image to be added and indicate the location of the IOU image from the IOU image option. Then click the Finish button to add the Cisco IOU image.
In the image below, you can see the Cisco IOU image information you added.
Add the Cisco IOU Router you added to the workspace and run the Router. You can view the Cisco IOU image information by using the show version command.
