How to Install GNS3 on Debian 9?
GNS3 is a very advanced network simulator program. One of the main reasons for the widespread use of GNS3 is that it is a very flexible program. You can also download and install GNS3 for free on your computer.
You can use GNS3 on many operating systems. For example, if you are using Windows 10 operating system, its installation is very simple and easy. In our previous articles, we installed GNS3 on Windows 10 and Ubuntu. You can access these articles from the links below.
In this article, we will install the latest version of the GNS3 network simulator program on Debian 9.3, a Linux-based operating system, and finally, we will test the program by adding a C7200 Cisco Router.
The road to follow for the GNS3 installation;
Add the following output to the /etc/apt/sources.list file.
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/gns3/ppa/ubuntu xenial main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/gns3/ppa/ubuntu xenial main
- sudo apt-get install dirmngr
- sudo apt-key adv –keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com –recv-keys F88F6D313016330404F710FC9A2FD067A2E3EF7B
- sudo apt-get update
- sudo apt-get install gns3-gui
How to Install GNS3 2.1.3 on Debian 9.3?
Follow the steps below for installing GNS3 2.1.3 on a Debian 9.3 Stretch operating system.
First, add the above output to the sources.list file. Make sure you open the Sources.list file as Root. Otherwise you will not be able to save changes on the file.
On the Debian desktop, open the Terminal and use the su command to access Root access.
After applying the sudo apt-key adv –keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com –recv-keys F88F6D313016330404F710FC9A2FD067A2E3EF7B command, if you get the No dirmngr error like the one below, you have to install the dirmngr package first.
To install the Dirmngr package, execute the following command.
sudo apt-get install dirmngr
When Dirmngr is installed, you need to add the Debian 9.3 ISO file to your virtual machine or your computer.
Add the ISO file to the Debian 9.3 virtual machine on VMware Workstation 14 from the virtual machine settings.
Now, you can continue to install dirmngr by pressing the Enter button.
Execute the sudo apt-key… command again. As you can see in the image below, this time the key for GNS3 was successfully imported.
In this step, execute the following command to update the packages.
sudo apt-get update
And finally, run the following command to install GNS3 2.1.3 on Debian.
sudo apt-get install gns3-gui
The installation reports that it will use 587 MB of additional space after this process. Click Yes (Y) to answer the question Do you want to continue?
Wait while GNS3 installation is installing on Debian…
Press Enter on Yes to use Wireshark on GNS3.
To run GNS3 on Debian, type “gns3” in Terminal and press Enter.
After successfully installing GNS3 2.1.3 on Debian 9.3, you can check the GNS3 version from the image below.
