What is DHCP? | How to Enable DHCP on Windows 10? – Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is a service that assigns an IP address, DNS address, gateway IP address, and subnet maskto all computers on the network.
What is DHCP? | How to Enable DHCP on Windows 10?
It is very easy to enable DHCP on Windows 10. With DHCP, a computer on the network receives the necessary TCP/IP information from a server or router. If you try to manually configure TCP/IP information for all computers on the network, it is advisable to use DHCP as you will need a lot of time.
After you configure a DHCP serverin your network structure, you can automatically assign TCP/IP settings to all computers. If your network has devices with WiFi hardware, these devices will also automatically receive TCP/IP information from your DHCP server.
A DHCP server-enabled server or router cannot assign an IP address on a computer that had been configured a Static IP address on the network.
All devices on the same network will be able to access the IP address pool that you have configured on your ADSL Router or on a local DHCP server. However, you must enable the DHCP service on these devices.
For example, in this article, we’ll enable DHCP on the Windows 10computer to get an automatic IP address from the ADSL Router.
How DHCP Works?
Let us briefly explain how DHCP works on the network. The DHCP service uses 4 packet requests. These; DHCP Discover, DHCP Offer, DHCP Request, and DHCP ACK.
These packages are required to configure TCP/IP information between DHCP Server and DHCP Client.
A new computer joining the network sends a DHCP Discover message to find out the DHCP server. After the computer has found the DHCP Server, the DHCP Offer task starts.
After the DHCP Server on the network receives the DHCP Discover package, it sends a DHCP Offer packet to the client to send an IP address.
The computer sending the DHCP offer message will send a DHCP request message to the DHCP server again. The computer informs you that you have confirmed the IP address with this message. In summary, it accepts IP address.
The DHCP Server receives the DHCP Request package and sends the DHCP ACK packet to assign the TCP/IP information to the client and completes it.
How to Enable DHCP Server on ADSL Modem?
If you are a home user and are using an ADSL Modem, you must enable the DHCP server on your device to assign an automatic IP address to clients on your network.
To enable the DHCP server on the TP-Link w8980 ADSL Router, first, enter the default gateway IP address to your web browser and press the Enter key. Then, click DHCP server option.
If the DHCP server is disabled, click Enable to enable the DHCP server.
To enable DHCP on Windows 10, you must configure the ADSL Router. After the DHCP server is enabled, you can specify which IP addresses to deploy on the 192.168.1.0 network. The following image is set to assign values between 192.168.1.100 and 192.168.1.199. After you enter DNS addresses, save the settings.
If you look at the IP addresses assigned by the DHCP server, you can see that the Android mobile phone received the 192.168.1.100 IP address.
How to Activate DHCP on Windows 10 Operating System?
To enable DHCP on Windows 10, you must configure your network adapter from the Network and Sharing Center.
Follow these steps in order to enable DHCP on your Windows 10 computer.
The first step in activating DHCP in Windows 10 is to open the Network and Share Center. You can reach the network and share center right after clicking on the Wireless icon, as shown in the image below.
Click the WiFi card or Ethernet card you are connected to. The wifi status window will open.
After the Wifi Status window opens, click the Properties button. The WiFi properties window will open.
Select the IPv4 option in the WiFi Properties window to enable DHCP on Windows 10 and click the Properties button.
In the following illustration, the settings are statically set. You can enter the desired IP address manually. From the DHCP server, we can enable the DHCP server on this screen to receive the IP address and other features.
Select the option in the below image to enable DHCP on Windows 10. After selecting the Automatically set Ip address option, the Set DNS server automatically option will be active.
After you have set the IP settings to be automatically received from the DHCP server, click OK to save the settings.
After you have enabled DHCP on Windows 10, click on your WiFi card and check the TCP/IP information you’ve received automatically.
What Happens When DHCP is Disabled?
As you can see, it is very easy to enable DHCP on Windows 10. The DHCP settings must be configured correctly. When the DHCP server is disabled, computers on the network cannot automatically obtain an IP address. If there are 150-200 computers in a network environment, the DHCP server must be enabled. Otherwise, you must configure the IP address and other information manually.
If DHCP is off, you must configure TCP/IP manually. In the above steps, you can examine the IP address, Subnet Mask, Gateway, and DNS IP addressesassigned to a computer. If DHCP is turned off in a networked environment with 200 computers, computers cannot receive TCP/IP information and communicate with each other.
