Forgotten Linux / Ubuntu operating system user or Root passwords can be easily change without needing any program.

If you forgot the user or Root passwords of the Linux operating system you are using, you do not have to reinstall the operating system. You can complete this process in just a few steps.

You can reset your password in approximately one minute by restarting your computer after using the Root Shell method. We will use Ubuntu Recovery Mode to fix the root password.

On other Linux distributions, the password reset process is the same. Follow these steps in order to reset your Linux root password.

   Step 1

When you turn on your computer, you do not remember your password and encounter the screen in the following image. Now restart your computer.

Start the GRUB menu by holding down the Shift key on your computer’s login screen.

The GRUB menu is as follows. Press the Enter key on the “Advanced options for Ubuntu” option in the GRUB menu.

Then press the Enter key on “Ubuntu, with Linux 4.10.0-21-generic (recovery mode)“. In this step, we will start the Recovery Mode in the Linux distribution.

Select and continue the “Drop to root shell prompt” option on the Recovery Mode.

In this step, press Enter to switch to the command prompt.

At the root command prompt, type mount -o rw, remount / and press Enter.

[email protected]:~# mount -o rw, remount /

   Step 8

In this step, you must type the user name whose password you want to reset. Specify a new password using passwd (username).

[email protected]:~# passwd (username)

 

Finally, restart your pc using the sudo reboot command. After you restart your computer, you can now log in with your new password.

[email protected]:~# sudo reboot

Wait while your Linux system is restarting …

If your GRUB menu opens after your system is turned on, you can continue by selecting Ubuntu.
