How to Install VMware Workstation 15 on Linux Mint

VMware Workstation Pro is the most popular virtualization program to set up and run virtual machines on your computer. You can use the VM Workstation for 30 days free of charge and buy later.

You can easily install VM Workstation 14/15 Pro on Windows and Linux-based operating systems and create operating systems such as Windows, Linux, Solaris, or macOS on your physical computer by creating new virtual machines.

The latest version of VM Workstation is 15.1.0 Pro. For Windows operating systems, the installation file with an .exe extension is used. For Linux distributions, the installation file with the .bundle extension is used.

In our previous articles, we had installed VM Workstation on Windows 10, Ubuntu and Debian.

In this article, we will install VM Workstation 15 Pro / 14 Pro on Linux Mint.

How to Run VMware Workstation 15 Pro in Linux Mint

Linux Mint 19.1 was released on December 19, 2018. The code name for Linux Mint 19.1 is “Tessa“. Linux Mint system will be supported until 2023 officially announced.

As you may recall, Linux Mint is an Ubuntu-based Linux distribution. For more information about Linux Mint 19.1, please visit https://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=3669.

Under this title, we will examine how to setup VM Workstation 15 on Linux Mint 19.1.

After installing Linux Mint 19.1 on your computer or upgrading your system to version 19.1, you can follow the instructions below to setup VMware Software.

   Step 1

After downloading VM virtualization software 15.1.0 Pro from here to your computer, open the Terminal on Linux Mint 19.1 by pressing CTRL + Alt + T together and then follow the command “sudo apt-get update“.

   Step 2

Execute “sudo apt install gcc build-essential -y” in Terminal to build dependent packages for VM Workstation on Linux Mint 19.1.

sudo apt install gcc build-essential -y

 
sudo apt install gcc build-essential -y

   Step 3

After switching to the location of the VM 15.bundle file, execute the following commands.

sudo chmod +x VMware-Workstation-Full-15.0.3-10952284.x86_64.bundle
sudo ./VMware-Workstation-Full-15.0.3-10952284.x86_64.bundle

 
sudo ./VMware-Workstation-Full-15.0.3-10952284.x86_64.bundle

   Step 4

After starting to the setup, accept the license agreement and click Next.

Accept the OVF Tool license agreement and click Next.

To check the updates initially, select Yes, and then click Next.

To support them, we encourage you to participate in the customer experience program. If you want to join CEIP, select Yes and click Next.

Type your user name to connect to the server and click Next.

Leave the Shared Virtual Machines location by default and click Next.

The Workstation Server uses the Https (443) port by default. If you want to change it, don’t forget to configure the required settings.

If you have purchased VM Workstation 15 Pro, type your license key in this window and click Next.

Click Install to start setting up Workstation 15.1.0 on Mint 19.1.

After you build the virtualization program, type “vmware” into the Start Menu and click on the program’s shortcut to run the program.

To use the virtualization program for 30 days at no cost, select VM Software 15 for 30 days and click OK.

How to Install VMware 14 Pro on Linux Mint 18

First, download the related software for Linux distributions from here. Then, follow the stages below for setting up VMware on Linux.

   Step 1

Run the Terminal on the Linux desktop and execute the following command to update the existing applications. After applying the command, type your Root password for Root access and press Enter.

sudo apt-get update

 
sudo apt-get update

   Step 2

To build the required dependencies for VMware 14 Pro, execute the following command.

sudo apt install gcc build-essential -y

 
sudo apt install gcc build-essential -y

   Step 3

Wait while installing dependencies for VMware on Mint.

Change the permissions of the .bundle extension file downloaded from VMware website by executing the following command.

chmod a+x VMware-Workstation-Full-14.1.1-7520167.x86_64.bundle

   Step 5

Run the following command to start setting up VM Software in Mint.

sudo ./VMware-Workstation-Full-14.1.1-7520167.x86_64.bundle

   Step 6

Accept the VMware Workstation license agreement and click the Next button.

Accept the license agreement for VMware OVF Tool for Linux and click Next.

   Step 8

If you want to check for updates for VMware when Mint starts, select Yes and click Next.

Select Yes to participate in the VMware customer experience development platform and click on the Next button.

Please enter your username to access Shared VMs and click Next.

Leave the location of the Shared VMs folder as default and click on the Next button.

Do not change port 443 for VMware software https access and continue VMware installation by clicking on the Next button.

   Step 13

If you have purchased VM Software, type the license key in this stage and click Next to continue. If you want to use VM Workstation as Trial, please click on the Next button.

Click the Install button to start the setup.

Wait while setting up VM Software 14.

To start the program, type vmware in the Terminal and press the Enter button.

Select I want to try the virtualization software for 30 days and click the OK button.

Type your root password and click the OK button.

Click the Close button to close the VM Software information window.

After successfully setting up VM Software 14.1.3 Pro on Mint, you can check the version of the program from Help/About.

    Hello,
    I installed VMware Workstation 15 Pro (licensed) on Linux Mint 19.1 and Mint is fully patched and running on the most current kernel as of today (4.15.0-52). The first VM I built is a Windows 10 OS and I am having a problem in that USB pass through is not working. USB 3.0 support is enabled and I have the box checked for “automatically connect USB devices” and also “show all USB input devices”. When I use the ‘add’ in hardware, neither my USB headset or USB hard drive show up as choices to present to the Windows 10 vm.
    I found some older articles on earlier versions of Linux that said VMware wont be able to show any USB device to a VM until the host OS (Linux Mint in my case) lets go of it first. The article said to force Linux to let go of it in a file (forgot the name) in the /etc folder but Mint does not have such a file in this newer Linux build.

    Any ideas what is keeping VMware from seeing USB devices so it can present them to a VM?
