How to Build VMware Workstation on Ubuntu Step by Step

As you know, VMware Workstation is the most popular virtualization program and works on Linux platforms as it works on Microsoft Windows operating systems.

With VM Workstation, you can create virtual machines and run multiple virtual computers on your computer at the same time. The VM Workstation virtualization program is not an open source and free program, but you can purchase it for 30 days free of charge after a trial period.

In addition, you can download and use VMware Workstation Player for free.

In our previous articles, we’ve looked at how to set up VM Workstation 14 on Windows 10 and set up VM Workstation 15. In this article, we will examine the steps of installing the VMware 14/15 Pro on Ubuntu 17.10 step by step.

How to Run VM Workstation/Player on Ubuntu 17.10

If you have not used Linux / Ubuntu operating system before, you can install the Ubuntu operating system by reading our article here.

   Step 1

For Ubuntu, download Workstation/Player from the link at the bottom of the article and copy it to your Ubuntu desktop.

Then open the terminal on the Ubuntu desktop. After executing the following command on the terminal, enter your Ubuntu Root password and press Enter.

Sudo apt-get update command: Used to update package lists of Linux-based operating systems.

   Step 2

Press Ctrl + L to clear the terminal screen and then execute the following command at the terminal.

Sudo apt install gcc build-essential command: The build-essential command to run GCC / G ++ compilers contains a list of packages and the necessary tools.

After applying the sudo apt install gcc build-essential command, start the process by pressing the Y (Yes) key to download the packages.

Press Ctrl + L to clear the terminal screen.

To switch to the desktop in Terminal, use the cd Desktop command, and then follow the command below to handle the permissions of the file.

Chmod +x command: Defines access to a file or directory.

   Step 7

Start the VM Workstation installation on Ubuntu by following the command below.

[email protected]:~$ sudo ./VMware-Workstation-Full-14.0.0.x86_64.bundle

   Step 8

Press Enter to continue the VM Workstation installation.

   Step 9

To read the license agreement faster, press the Space key.

To accept the license agreement, type Yes and press Enter.

For Linux users, press Enter to accept the OVF components.

Press Yes again and press Enter to continue.

If you want VM Workstation 14/15 to check for updates at startup, type Yes and press Enter.

To join the VMware user experience program and to support VMware, press Yes and press Enter.

Continue by pressing Enter for VMware shared virtual machine permissions.

Press Enter to confirm the VMware Shared VMs file location.

Press Enter to configure the HTTPS port (443) port access.

If you have purchased this program, you can enter the VMware License Key in this section. Otherwise, if you want to try 30 days free of charge, press Enter to continue.

   Step 19

VM Workstation 14 is now ready for installation on Ubuntu 17.10. Press Enter to start the installation. If you want to cancel Ubuntu VMware installation, press Ctrl + C.

VM Workstation 14 installation in Ubuntu completed successfully! Now, type and start it on the menu.

Start VMware 14/15.

To use as Trial, select I want to try VM 14 for 30 days and click OK.

Unable to start the program and gave Unable to copy the user’s Xauthorization file error. Close the error window and continue with the next step.

VMware license registration failed because of a Xauthorization file error.

Close the license window and open the Terminal on the Ubuntu desktop to fix/resolve the Xauthorization file error.

Execute the commands below to resolve the Xauthorization file error.

[email protected]:~$ touch ~/.Xauthority
[email protected]:~$ chmod 600 ~/.Xauthority

Restart the program and click on the Trial option in the License window.

After solving the error “Unable to copy the user’s Xauthorization file“, the Root password is asked for the VMware license. Type your root password and click OK.

After fixing the error, the VMware program opened successfully!
