Follow the steps below to install VMware Tools step by step for the Ubuntu virtual machine installed on VMware Workstation.
After running Ubuntu on VMware, you will see the bottom message that VMware Tools is not installed. Continue by clicking the Update Tools button to start the Ubuntu VMware Tools installation.
If the CD/DVD device is not installed on the Ubuntu virtual machine, you will get an error like the one below. To solve this problem, close the virtual machine and then insert the CD/DVD device.
After restarting the Ubuntu virtual machine, click on Update VMware Toolsor Install VMware Toolsin the VM menu.
To install VMware Tools, you will see a tip like the one below.
Once you click Update/Install VMware Tools, the VMware Tools ISO image will automatically be added to the CD/DVD device.
Copy the files in the VMware Tools CD image.
Create a new folder on the Ubuntu desktop. Then, paste the files you copied into the folder.
Run Terminal in the VM Tools folder.
To extract the tar.gz extension folder, run tar -xvzf VMwareTools-10.1.6-5214329.tar.gz.
tar -xvzf VMwareTools-10.1.6-5214329.tar.gz
For Ubuntu VMware Tools installation, the files have been extracted into the VMware-tools-distrib folder.
Switch back to the terminal and execute cd vmware-tools-distrib.
To start Ubuntu VMware Tools installation process, run sudo ./vmware-install.pl -d.
sudo ./vmware-install.pl -d
Write your root password and press Enter.
After typing your password, the installation will begin. The -d command here applies the default settings.
VMware Tools installation on Ubuntu has been successfully completed!
You can restart the Ubuntu virtual machine for the settings to take effect.
