In this article, we will install the latest version of Oracle VM VirtualBox on Linux Mint 19.1 / 18.3 step by step.

How to Run VirtualBox 6.0.10 on Mint PC

The latest version of the Oracle VM program is 6.0.10. Several new features have been added to the program with VB 6. Here are the main innovations;

  • The user interface is made simpler and easier.
  • HiDPI and a great scaling experience have been improved.
  • The export capability has been added to move virtual machines to Oracle Cloud infrastructure.
  • Support for Surround Speaker used by Windows 10 Build 1809 has improved.
  • The vboxing-mount toolkit has added to access Host machines from Host.

Now, you can follow the below steps in order to install the latest version of the Oracle VM program on your system.

   Step 1

Press Ctrl + Alt + T together to open the Terminal and update the Mint package list before starting the installation.

sudo apt update

   Step 2

To set up VBox in Mint, you need to edit sources.list. To do this, execute the following command in Terminal and open the sources.list.

sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list

 
sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list

   Step 3

Add the following address to the sources.list and press Ctrl + X, then press Enter to save the file.

deb https://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian bionic contrib

 
deb download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian bionic contrib

   Step 4

To add the Public Key of the Oracle VM, execute the following command in Terminal. And then update your package list again with sudo apt update command.

wget -q https://www.virtualbox.org/download/oracle_vbox_2016.asc -O- | sudo apt-key add -

 
wget -q virtualbox.org/download/oracle_vbox_2016.asc -O- | sudo apt-key add -

   Step 5

To start the program setup, follow the command sudo apt install virtualbox-6.0.

sudo apt install virtualbox-6.0

 
sudo apt install virtualbox-6.0

   Step 6

Wait while the Oracle VBox software installs.

   Step 7

After you have successfully completed the VirtualBox 6.0.10 setup, you must install the Extension Pack.

   Step 8

To download VB 6.0 Extension Pack to your system, use the following command in Terminal.

wget https://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/6.0.4/Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-6.0.4.vbox-extpack

 
If the new version of VB is published, you can change the version in the command above. For example, you can edit the command as 6.0.X.

wget download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/6.0.4/Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-6.0.4.vbox-extpack

   Step 9

Follow the command below to install the VB extension package.

sudo VBoxManage extpack install Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-6.0.4.vbox-extpack

 
sudo VBoxManage extpack install Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-6.0.4.vbox-extpack

   Step 10

The extension package was successfully installed!

Open VB – Preferences and click on Extensions, and then you can see that the Extension Pack is installed.

In Linux Mint 19.1, we have successfully installed a clean VirtualBox 6.0.10 setup!

How to Install Oracle VM Software 6.0.10 on Linux Mint 19.1 / 18

Follow the steps below to install and run the latest version 6.0.10 of Oracle VM VirtualBox on your Linux Mint system.

   Step 1

There are 3 methods for installing VBox on Linux Mint.

  1. You can install VB using Package Manager.
  2. You can install VB using .deb package.
  3. You can install VB with apt-get on Terminal.

To install the latest version of VB on the Linux Mint, we will use the apt-get method of the Terminal screen. On the Linux Mint 19/18 desktop, open the Terminal and run the following command to edit the apt package software list.

sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list

 
sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list

   Step 2

According to the Linux Mint version you are using, add one of the following output to sources.list and press Ctrl + X, then press the Y key and press Enter to save the file.

Linux Mint 18: deb https://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian xenial contrib
Linux Mint 19: deb [arch=amd64] https://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian bionic contrib

   Step 3

After updating the Mint package list, add the Public Key of the VB repository using the following command in Terminal.

wget -q https://www.virtualbox.org/download/oracle_vbox_2016.asc -O- | sudo apt-key add -

 
wget -q virtualbox.org/download/oracle_vbox_2016.asc -O- | sudo apt-key add -

   Step 4

Now execute the sudo apt-get update command to update the software packages of Mint.

sudo apt-get update command

   Step 5

To start Oracle Software installation on Mint 19/18, execute the following command. After this, you will be prompted to use 187 MB of disk space and press Y to continue with the installation and press Enter.

sudo apt-get install virtualbox-6.0

 
sudo apt-get install virtualbox-6.0

   Step 6

And finally, install DKMS to update the kernel modules for VB.

sudo apt-get install dkms

 
sudo apt-get install dkms

   Step 7

To start the program, type VirtualBox in Terminal and press Enter.

After successfully installing VBox 5.0 on Linux Mint 19/18, you can check the version of the program from Help / About.

    Hi,
    Had a few issues. Got errors after step 6, relative to permission denied to open lock file(13) and inability to lock the administration directory. Any chance you could point me in the right direction?
