How to Create a New Virtual Machine on Hyper-V

Hyper-V is not available for the Windows 7 operating system. However, it comes ready on Windows 8, 8.1 and 10 operating systems. Before installing Hyper-V on your physical computer, you should check whether your processor has virtualization capability.

If your processor has virtualization support, you must enable this feature. If your processor’s virtualization feature is disabled, you can access the corresponding article from the link below.

After installing Hyper-V on the Windows 10 operating system, you must create a new virtual machine on this virtual machine program to install the operating system.

In this article, we’ll explore step by step on how to create a new Virtual Machine with Hyper-V.

Creating a Virtual Machine

To create a new virtual machine with Hyper-V on Windows 10, follow the steps below.

   Step 1

After installing Hyper-V on Windows 10, run it.

Running Hyper-V Software

   Step 2

From the Hyper-V Actions menu, click New, and then click Virtual Machine.

Actions / Virtual Machine

   Step 3

In the New Virtual Machine Wizard window, there are two options.

  1. Click Finish to create a virtual machine with the default settings.
  2. Click Next to create a virtual machine with Custom configuration.

It is always recommended to create a Custom virtual machine. Click Next to continue.

   Step 4

You need to enter a name for the virtual machine you are going to create. If you are going to install a Windows 10 operating system, you can type “Windows 10” in the Name field.

It also recommends that you back up the virtual machine that you will create to a different location. For this operation, you can use an external hard disk.

Specifying Name and Location

   Step 5

After configuring your settings in Specify Name and Location, click Next.

   Step 6

If you have UEFI support for the operating system you are going to install, you can continue by selecting Generation 2.

   Step 7

In the Assign Memory area, specify the RAM value for the virtual machine. If you have 16 RAM on your physical computer, you can assign 4 GB of RAM to the virtual machine.

If you want the virtual machine to automatically adjust the amount of RAM, you can select the Use Dynamic Memory for this virtual machine option.

   Step 8

In the Configure Networking section, we continue because we haven’t added a new adapter yet.

Network Configuration

   Step 9

Configure the disk size and disk location for the virtual machine in the Connect Virtual Hard Disk space.

   Step 10

Continue by selecting Install an operating system later.
