How to Install Cisco IOU L2 Appliance in GNS3?
GNS3 is a self-renewing network emulator program. People preparing for the Cisco exams use the GNS3 program more often. The biggest advantage of using GNS3 is that it is free. Many labs can be designed and run on GNS3.
Many people had problems with using Cisco switches on GNS3. The network devices can be installed and used more easily with the GNS3 Appliance architecture.
In order to use Layer 2 Switch on GNS3, you need to download the Appliance application. You can find the Cisco IOU L2.gns3a file at the end of this article.
Follow the steps below to import the GNS3 L2 Appliance.
After downloading the Cisco IOU L2.gns3a file to your computer, double-click on the file to import appliance in GNS3.
Information about installing Cisco IOU L2 provide after the GNS3 program launched. You can see that the Layer 2 Switch is in the Multilayer Switch category.
Continue by clicking the Next button to import the GNS3 Appliance.
For the Cisco IOU L2 Appliance installation, select the GNS3 VM Server as shown in the following image and click the Next button.
The files required for Cisco IOU L2 on GNS3 are as follows. You can update the downloadable files by pressing the Refresh button. Select the existing Cisco IOU L2 15.2.d (i86bi-linux-l2-adventerprisek9-15.2d.bin) file and check if the GNS3 VM Server is running before clicking Next.
GNS3 VM Server is running on the backplane now.
You must have Cisco L2 image in the Required Files window. The distribution of these images is strictly forbidden and you can research on the Internet. After you have the Cisco IOU image, click on the Next button to load the Cisco IOU L2 15.2d image you selected.
Would you like to install the Cisco IOU L2 15.2d version? Continue by saying Yes.
The hardware features for the Cisco IOU L2 Appliance to work on the GNS3 VM are as follows.
The GNS3 Appliance import process reports that the new device is in the Multilayer Switch category.
The process to install Cisco IOU L2 15.2d Appliance in GNS3 is completed successfully and click OK to continue.
To control the Cisco IOU L2 Appliance, create a new project in GNS3.
As you can see in the image below, the Cisco IOU L2 15.2d image is available the Layer 2 Switch in the devices. Drag and drop the Layer 2 Switch to the workspace.
After completing the Cisco IOU L2 installation on the GNS3 VM, perform the show version command at the CLIprompt and check the system image and installation location of the Cisco IOU Layer 2 Switch.
As you can see, the Cisco IOU L2 Appliance has successfully installed!
You can control the interfaces of the IOU L2 Switch by running the show ip interface brief command on the L2 Switch.
To verify the Cisco IOU L2 Appliance, create a new VLAN and run the do show vlan command in config mode to verify the VLANconfiguration.
