How to Add Cisco IOS to GNS3?
You can install GNS3 network simulator on Windows, Linux and macOS operating systems. Adding a Cisco Router IOS image to GNS3 is very easy. In this article, we will examine how to add the Cisco Router IOS image on the most commonly used GNS3 program to prepare for the Cisco exams.
How to Add Cisco Router to GNS3?
To add Cisco Router on GNS3, follow the steps below.
After you open GNS3, select Run only legacy IOS on my computerin the Setup Wizard window.
After selecting Run only legacy IOS on my computer, click Next.
In the Local Server Configuration window, leave the default settings and click Next.
In the Summary window, click Finish.
Type the Project name and click OK.
In the New appliance template window, select Add an IOS Router using a real IOS image (supported by Dynamips).
Click the OK button to continue the steps to add or import Cisco IOS.
Click the Browse button to add Router IOS to GNS3.
Select the Router IOS image and click the Open button.
Click Yes to extract the compressed IOS image.
Wait while the Cisco Router IOS image is being decomposed.
After adding Cisco IOS on GNS3, click Next to continue.
After configuring the name and platform of the version of the Cisco Router that you added, click Next.
Configure a RAM value based on your computer’s hardware specifications so that the Cisco Router on GNS3 will work more efficiently and click Next.
In the Network Adapters window, you can select which slots you want to add to the Router. To add the FastEthernet interface to the Cisco Router 7200 as in the following image, select C7200-IO-FE on Slot0 and click Next.
You must specify an Idle-PC value for each Cisco IOS image that you add to GNS3. The Idle-PC value may vary depending on the performance of your computer.
Click the Idle-PC Finder button to set the Idle-PC value for the Cisco Router 7200.
Wait while setting the Idle-PC value for Cisco IOS…
After configuring the most appropriate value for Cisco Router IOS image, click OK button to continue.
After adding the Cisco Router on GNS3 successfully, click on the OK button in the IOS Router Templates window.
Drag and drop the Cisco Router you added from the Devices / Router to the workspace.
Right click on the button to run the Router.
Cisco Router is now off. You can see this from Topology Summary. Click Start from the Router properties.
When the Cisco Router is running, the Redicon in the Topology Summary section will be Green. You can open the CLI prompt by double-clicking on it to configure the Cisco Router.
As you can see in the image below, the Cisco Router IOS image you added on GNS3 works successfully!
For example, you can check the running configuration file of the Cisco Router using the R1# show running-config command.
How to Connect the Cisco Router to the Physical Network on PC in GNS3?
To add a Cisco Router that you added to GNS3 to the physical network that your desktop or Laptop computer is connected to, you must configure a Cloud connection.
You can also use this method to connect the Cisco Router to the Internet on GNS3.
To configure a FastEthernet interface of the Cisco Router, double-click on it and open the CLI command prompt, and then execute the commands below. The point you need to pay attention to is that you give the FastEthernet interface an IP address from your physical network.
R1# conf t
R1(config)# interface fastethernet 0/0
R1(config-if)# ip address 192.168.1.100 255.255.255.0
R1(config-if)# no shutdown
Now add a Cloud to the GNS3 workspace.
Right click on Cloud1.
In the Cloud setting menu that opens, you must select the network card of your computer that accesses to your physical network. Select either Wi-Fi, Ethernet or VMnet Adapter.
Connect one end of the cable to Cloud1/Wi-Fi and the other end to the FastEthernet0/0 interface you have configured.
Click Start/Resume all devices to run Cloud1 and Router.
After adding the Cisco Router on the GNS3 to the physical network, test the network connection by pingingthe Router from your computer. As you can see, the GNS3 Router communicates with your physical network.
