How to Install Cisco Packet Tracer in Ubuntu 18.10 Step by Step?
If you have not installed Ubuntu 18.10 before, we recommend that you check out the article on how to install Ubuntu 18.10 with VMware. To install Packet Tracer 7.2.1 on Ubuntu 18.10 first download the program from here.
After downloading the network simulator to your computer, follow the steps below in order to install Packet Tracer on Ubuntu 18.10.
On the Ubuntu 18.10 desktop, press CTRL + Alt + T to open the Terminal and execute the following commands in Terminal to unpack the Packet Tracer.tar file.
After extracting the Cisco Packet Tracer 7.2.1 installation files, run the install file in the CPT72 folder to start the installation.
Press the Enter key to complete the installation and continue.
After installing Packet Tracer 7.2.1 on Ubuntu 18.10, go to the next step to run the program.
In the Terminal, run cd /opt/pt/bin/ to go to the Cisco Packet Tracer 7.2.1 installation location. To run Cisco Packet Tracer 7.2.1, execute the command ./PacketTracer7.
As you can see in the image below, the Packet Tracer did not work. For Packet Tracer to work properly, you need to install libpng12.
In the Google search box, type libpng12 and open the debian website. Download libpng12 for Ubuntu 18.10 to your computer.
Click the Install button to install Libpng12.
After you have installed libpng12, use the ./PacketTracer7 command again to open the Cisco Packet Tracer. As you can see in the image below, Packet Tracer 7.2.1 now works fine.
After running Cisco Packet Tracer 7.2.1 on Ubuntu 18.10, click the Guest Login button to enter to the program as a guest.
Confirm the guest login as follows.

How to Create Cisco Packet Tracer 7.2.1 Desktop Shortcut on the Ubuntu 18.10?
The shortcut of a program that you install in the Windows operating system is usually running smoothly. This is sometimes a problem on Linux systems. After installing Packet Tracer on Ubuntu 18.10, the desktop shortcut is not created.
To create a desktop shortcut for Packet Tracer on Ubuntu 18.10, open the /opt/pt/bin/ folder and copy the Cisco-PacketTracer.desktop file to the desktop as shown in the following image.
You need to modify the Cisco-PacketTracer.desktop file. Open the terminal and run the gedit Cisco-PacketTracer.desktop command.
Change the Exec value to the /opt/pt/packettracer and save the file.
To make the desktop shortcut executable, execute chmod + x Cisco-Packet Tracer.desktop.
To run Cisco Packet Tracer 7.2.1, double-click on the file and click the Trust and Launch button in the window that opens.

After installing Packet Tracer on Ubuntu, no start menu shortcut is created. So you will need to create a new shortcut menu.

In the search box, type Cisco Packet Tracer and check the start menu.
Create a new shortcut by copying the existing Packet Tracer shortcut on the desktop. Next, open the Terminal and execute the command below to make the Start Menu Shortcut.
