Kali is a Debian-based Linux distribution used for Penetration testing and Security audit. This distribution developed by Offensive Security and includes hundreds of free tools for Penetration and Security audits.

In our previous articles, we installed Packet Tracer on Windows and other Linux distributions and examined how it works;

In this article, we will install and configure the latest version of Packet Tracer on Kali, a widely used Linux distribution.

How to Install CPT 7.2.2 on Kali Linux 2019

The version 7.2.2 of Packet Tracer was released on September 11, 2019, for download via Netacad. Although this is a maintenance release, it removes the dependent Java files for the Skills Assessment.

Also, Networking Academy created a Setup GUI to make it easier to install CPT on Linux systems. It was downloaded older versions as tar.gz, now the CPT file extension is .run.

When installing this Cisco simulator software on your Linux computer, you must install the libpng12 file. Otherwise, after installing, it will not react when you try to run the program.

   Step 1

After downloading the program to your computer, copy PacketTracer-7.2.2-ubuntu-setup.run to the desktop folder, and then open the terminal in this folder.

First, check your Internet connection and check the Kali system version with the cat /etc/os-release command.

After configuring the file permission, execute the following command on the terminal to start the installation.

./PacketTracer-7.2.2-ubuntu-setup.run

Do not change the default location in the Installation Folder window and continue by clicking Next.

After reading the Packet Tracer license agreement, accept it and click Next to continue.

Click Install to start the installation.

After completing the installation, click Finish.

Type packettracer to run CPT on the terminal and press Enter.

You can examine the following image that Packet Tracer failed to start. This is because; the dependent packages for CPT are not installed.

Open the Kali 2019 sources list with the command nano /etc/apt/sources.list and add the following address to the list and save the file.

deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian stable main contrib non-free

Update the Kali repository list using the apt-update command.

One of the most important dependent packages for Packet Tracer is libpng. To download libpng, execute the following command on the terminal.

wget http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/pool/main/libp/libpng/libpng12-0_1.2.50-2+deb8u3_amd64.deb

Execute the dpkg -i libpng12-0_1.2.50-2+deb8u3_amd64.deb command to start the libpng installation on Kali.

When installing libpng, you may get an error in the terminal as follows because the multiarch-support package is required for this software to work.

To install the multiarch package on Kali, execute the apt install multiarch-support command.

After you try to install libpng again, you will see that the operation was successful. At the terminal, try running the simulator program with the packettracer command.

Click the Confirm Guest button to log in without opening a Cisco session on the software.

After running Cisco Packet Tracer 7.2.2, you can check the new version in Help / About!

How to Install CPT 7.2.1 on Kali Linux 2018

Follow the steps below to install Packet Tracer step by step on the latest version of Kali 2018.X.

   Step 1

First, download the Packet Tracer for Linux to your computer and then open the Terminal on your system.

In the terminal, execute sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list and add the repo address “deb https://ftp.de.debian.org/debian jessie main” and press Ctrl + X / Y / Enter to save the settings press.

   Step 2

After updating the repository list, perform the following commands in order to start the installation.

cd Desktop/
mkdir CPT72
tar -xvzf Packet\ Tracer\ 7.2.1\ for\ Linux\ 64\ bit.tar.gz -C CPT72/

 
The above command will extract the PacketTracer.tar.gz file to the folder named CPT72.

tar -xvzf Packet\ Tracer\ 7.2.1\ for\ Linux\ 64\ bit.tar.gz -C CPT72/

   Step 3

Go to the CPT72 folder on the Terminal and execute the “./install” command. After the installation starts, press Enter to accept the license agreement.

Continuously press Enter to complete the installation process.

After a successful installation, you will receive a message as shown in the image below.

Now, go to “cd /opt/pt/bin” and run “./PacketTracer7” to run CPT 7.2.1.

cd /opt/pt/bin
./PacketTracer7

 
If you receive “libpng12.so.0” error in this step, go to the next step and install the libpng12 package.

   Step 6

To setup the Libpng12 package on Kali, execute the sudo apt-get install libpng12-0 command at the Terminal.

sudo apt-get install libpng12-0

 
sudo apt-get install libpng12-0

   Step 7

After trying to run Packet Tracer again, you will encounter “libcrypto.so.1.0.0” error as in the image below.

After you fix the Libcrypto error, you can now run Packet Tracer on your Kali computer!

Creating a Desktop Shortcut

After installing CPT, the desktop shortcut is not created by default in Kali. Therefore, you must manually create a shortcut. Otherwise, you will have to run the program with the terminal continuously.

To create a Packet Tracer desktop shortcut, perform the following command on the Terminal.

cp /opt/pt/bin/Cisco-PacketTracer.desktop ~/Desktop/
chmod +x ~/Desktop/Cisco-PacketTracer.desktop

To create a start menu shortcut for Packet Tracer, perform the following command in Terminal.

cp ~/Desktop/Cisco-PacketTracer.desktop /usr/share/applications

After typing the name of the program in the Start menu, you will see that the shortcut is created as follows.
