What is EIGRP Protocol in Networking?

EIGRP was developed by Cisco in the mid-1980s to exchange Routing Table information between IP-based networks between Cisco Routers.

EIGRP is a Distance Vector and Link State routing protocol. That is, it is a Hybrid protocol. The EIGRP protocol was developed because of the limitations of the RIP distance vector routing protocol.

EIGRP protocol provides Classless VLSM support. It also creates a Router group that uses the same routing protocol using the EIGRP Autonomous System numbering system.

EIGRP is an enhanced version of the IGRP routing protocol. According to the RIP and IGRP protocols, it uses the more advanced Distance Vector algorithm to find the best route to a particular destination.

How Does EIGRP Work?

Unlike RIP, EIGRP creates two database tables. These tables are;

1. Neighbor Table
2. Topology Table

The EIGRP Neighbor table contains information such as IP address information, interface types, and bandwidth of Routers in networks that directly connected to the Router.

The EIGRP topology table contains a network map prepared by all routes from neighboring Routers.

EIGRP uses the DUAL algorithm (Diffused Update Algorithm) to calculate the shortest path to a destination and add this route to the routing table.

The modified EIGRP Topology table is used to find the best alternative to a worm in a network. If there is no route in the topology table, EIGRP queries neighboring routers.

EIGRP Features

If we need to list EIGRP features;

1. A change in the network results in rapid integration.
2. Supports CIDR and VLSM.
3. Hop Count can be configured from 1 to 255.
4. It uses the more advanced DUAL algorithm.
5. It uses Bandwidth and Delay metrics.
6. It uses Reliability, Load and MTU metrics.
7. EIGRP does not support non-Cisco routers.
8. It provides secure access over RTP (Reliable Transport Protocol).
9. EIGRP does not use Broadcast Updates.

In addition to the EIGRP features, EIGRP uses two Distance Values. It uses the 90 metrics for routes learned by the EIGRP protocol. It uses the 170 metrics for routes learned by other routing protocols.
