What is EIGRP?

In the mid-1980s, EIGRP was developed by Cisco to exchange Routing Table information between IP-based networks between Cisco Routers.

It is the Distance Vector and Link State routing protocol. That is, Hybrid is a protocol. The RIP distance-vector was developed due to the limitations of the routing protocol.

It offers Classless VLSM support and creates a Router group using the same routing protocol using the Autonomous System numbering system.

EIGRP is an advanced version of the IGRP routing protocol. It uses the more advanced Distance Vector algorithm to find the best route to a specific target according to the RIP and IGRP protocols.

How Does It Work?

Unlike RIP, it creates two database tables. These tables;

1. Neighbor Table
2. Topology Table

The neighboring table contains the IP address information, interface types and bandwidth of the Routers in the networks directly connected to the Router.

The topology table contains a network map prepared by all routes from neighboring routers.

It uses the DUAL algorithm to calculate the shortest route to a destination and add this route to the routing table (Diffused Update Algorithm).

The Topology table as a result of a change in a network is used to find the best alternative way. If there is no route in the topology table, it queries the neighboring Routers.

Features

If we need to list EIGRP features;

1. It provides rapid integration due to a change in the network.
2. Supports CIDR and VLSM.
3. Hop Count can be configured from 1 to 255.
4. Uses the more advanced DUAL algorithm.
5. Uses Bandwidth and Delay metrics.
6. Reliability uses Load and MTU metrics.
7. It does not support non-Cisco Routers.
8. Provides secure communication over RTP (Reliable Transport Protocol).
9. It does not use Broadcast Updates.

In addition to these features, it uses two Distance Values ​​and uses the 90 metrics for routes learned by this protocol. It uses the 170 metrics for routes learned by other routing protocols.
