How to Install Cisco Packet Tracer 7.1 on Ubuntu 17.10 Using Wine?
Installing the Cisco Packet Tracer on Windows operating systems is simple and easy. If you want to install Packet Tracer on a Linux based Ubuntu, you need to know about Ubuntu Terminal.
According to Cisco Netacad, Cisco Packet Tracer 7.1 run in the most stable Ubuntu 14.04 64 bit.

In this article, we will use the Wine application to run Windows applications on Linux. After installing Wine on Ubuntu, we will use Wine to install Cisco Packet Tracer 7.1.
How to Install Wine on Ubuntu to Run Windows Programs?
To install Ubuntu 17.10 with VMware, check out How to Ubuntu 17.10 on VMware Workstation 14 video. First, we will install Wine on Ubuntu 17.10 for the installation of Cisco Packet Tracer 7.1 using Wine and then we will run Packet Tracer 7.1 64 Bit.exe file with Wine program.
For Wine installation on Ubuntu 17.10;
- On the Ubuntu desktop, open the Right Button / Terminal.
- In the terminal, apply the following commands respectively.
- sudo dpkg –add-architecture i386
- Wget -nc https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/Release.key
- sudo apt-key add Release.key
- sudo apt-add-repository https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/
- sudo apt-get update
- sudo apt-get install –install-recommends winehq-stable
After applying the above commands in order, the most suitable running version of Wine program will be downloaded and installed on Ubuntu.
How to Install Cisco Packet Tracer 7.1 using Wine?
After completing the Wine installation on Ubuntu, we will now perform the steps to install Cisco Packet Tracer 7.1 using Wine. Copy the Packet Tracer.exe file onto Ubuntu and then follow the steps below.
Right-click on PacketTracer71_64bit.exe and click Open with Other Application.
Click the View All Applications button.
In the program list opened, select Wine Windows Program Loader.
The necessary programs for Wine need to be installed. In the Wine Mono Installer window, click the Install button.
In the Wine Gecko Installer window, click the Install button.
The configuration of the Wine application is being updated.
In the Wine Gecko Installer window, click Install again.
You can now start installing Cisco Packet Tracer 7.1 using the Wine program. Continue by clicking the Next button in the Cisco Packet Tracer 7.1 Setup Wizard window.
Accept the license agreement for Cisco Packet Tracer 7.1 and click on the Next button.
Continue by leaving the Packet Tracer installation location at the default setting.
Click the Next button in the Packet Tracer menu setting window.
To create a shortcut for Cisco Packet Tracer 7.1, select Create a desktop icon and click the Next button.
Click the Install button to start the installation of Cisco Packet Tracer 7.1 on Ubuntu 17.10.
It is installing Packet Tracer with Wine on Ubuntu.
After completing the installation of Packet Tracer 7.1, click on the OK button in the info window.
To launch Cisco Packet Tracer 7.1, select the Launch Cisco Packet Tracer option and click the Finish button.
Packet Tracer reports the location where user files will be saved. Click the OK button to continue.
You need a Netacad account for the Cisco Packet Tracer program. Otherwise, you can only save 10 projects. To create a Cisco Netacad account, you can browse How to Create Cisco Netacad Account.
You can check the Packet Tracer version. Now close the Packet Tracer program.
Double-click the .desktop file on the Ubuntu desktop and click Trust and Launch in the info window.
After you allow the application, you can see that the Cisco Packet Tracer 7.1 symbol is correct.
