In the previous article, we explained What is Static NAT on Cisco Router?. Dynamic NAT is similar to Static NAT. But the biggest difference between them is the manual operation in Static NAT and the creation of a pool in Dynamic NAT.

In Dynamic NAT in networking, the private IP addresses on the local network are matched by a group of IP addresses. Matching is provided between global IP addresses and private IP addresses. The Ip addresses entered into the NAT process are matched with any Ip address from a group of Ip addresses assigned by the ISP.

To understand Dynamic NAT in networking, you can look at the general working logic of NAT in the image below.

According to the above picture, when Dynamic NAT 192.168.1.10 IP address connects the Internet, it will place the ISP IP address in the Source part of the Ip packet. For example, NAT mapping will be provided with an IP address that is idle between 200.1.1.1 and 200.1.1.10 IP addresses.

The following network topology is designed with the Cisco Packet Tracer program. As an example of a simple Dynamic NAT, the network topology below can be shown.

If we are going to explain the above image, you can see that Dynamic IP is configured on the Cisco Router when computers with specific IP addresses 192.168.10.10 and 192.168.10.20 ping the 10.0.0.2 IP address.

Private IP addresses will use 10.0.0.5 – 10.0.0.10 IP addresses assigned by ISP. Since the first operation on the network was made from the 192.168.10.10 Ip addressed computer, Dynamic NAT matched on the idle 10.0.0.5 IP address.

On Dynamic NAT output, 192.168.10.20 Ip address is translated to 10.0.0.6 Ip address.

For Dynamic NAT it is absolutely necessary to create a pool. The difference from Static NAT is that an Ip pool is created for one-to-one matching. The Ip packages returning from the Internet are also sent to the local network by performing NAT in the same way.

A packet going from 10.0.0.2 Ip address to 192.168.10.10 Ip address will write the 10.0.0.5 Ip address at the target Ip address. Then NAT processing on the Cisco Router will be applied and the IP packet destination address will be translated to 192.168.10.10 Ip address.
