The Cisco Router boot process takes place in 3 steps. These steps happen quickly and the Router is open. If there is any problem, it will fail and the Router will not open. Or, if it can not find the initial configuration file, it will enter the Setup Mode, ie Setup mode.

   Step 1

Testing Router POST and Starting Bootstrap

The first step in the Cisco Router boot process is to open the POST process and Bootstrap program. For this operation, POST operation will be executed first. Because the POST will test the Cisco Router’s hardware. If no errors are found, Bootstrap program will be installed.

   Step 2

Locating and Loading Router Cisco IOS

In the second step, after successfully completing the first step of the Cisco Router, the next step is to find the location of the IOS and load it. The Bootstrap program locates the Cisco IOS software and then loads it onto RAM.

First, it finds out the IOS software in the Cisco Router’s Flash memory. If not found, the TFTP server configuration dials and tries to connect to the TFTP server if found. If it does not find it here, it looks at the initial configuration file and if finds a configured location here, it loads from here the Router Cisco IOS software.

By default, the Cisco Router loads Cisco IOS software from its own Flash memory. If you want to change this setting, you can change it with a small setting in the configuration settings.

   Step 3

Finding and Running Router Startup Configuration File

After the second step, a startup configuration file is searched on the Bootstrap NVRAM after the Cisco Router IOS software is installed. If it can not find this file, the router enters setup mode to create a new startup file.

If it finds the bootstrap initialization configuration file, it copies it directly to RAM. We can confirm this successfully with the name of the router opened (eg R1>).

In the initial configuration file; All settings previously made on the Cisco router are found. These settings include all settings such as Interface configurations, routing information, Console password and FTP settings.

What is Running Configuration File?

In the running configuration file, if the Cisco router is first turned on and there are no settings on it, the user will take it to install mode. If you want to make settings in the installation mode, otherwise it is not a mandatory operation.

When you manually configure the new settings on the Cisco router, the current settings refer to the running configuration file. For example; You have assigned an IP address to any Interface unit. If you do not save the working configuration file for the Cisco router, the settings you made when you restarted the router will be lost.

When you reboot the Cisco Router, the Router will redirect you to setup mode.
